We had the opportunity to attend the FABTECH Conference this past fall. Let me rephrase that; we had the opportunity to “hike” the FABTECH Conference. After day 1 we turned on our step counters and recorded about 8 miles of booth to booth, talking, learning, networking, business card giving/taking, and swag hauling. 8 MILES!!!
This week is the American Coatings Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. While we would have loved to go we know as a small business that we can’t be everywhere. These events are great ways to stimulate new ideas and thinking, helping us break out of a rut. However, if you are like me it becomes like sand in a funnel; works great for a while but if you fill it too full too fast it gets all jammed up. The question then becomes, how do we sort through the new ideas, great techniques, future steps, he does this, she does that, budding business deals, and on and on and on and on………..? My recommendation, small bites.
Try to pick out one great idea that can be easily implemented and build from there. It will give you the excitement of a win and the encouragement to move forward. It will also ensure that you can put the needed energy into that idea to help ensure its success. I know I’ve jumped into a lot of great ideas all at once and quickly burned myself out. The end product was very underwhelming, like watered down Kool-Aid.
My question for you, what’s your approach? Do you attack new ideas the same way? Do you have a list of ideas waiting in the wings? As always we love to hear from you!
